For the past couple of years most workers have been complaining about how tough life can be at the moment and how much of a struggle it can be to make ends meet. Taxi drivers across Spain are earning less due to the higher cost of living and the increase in fuel.

So it is with utter amazement that that we hear the Malaga Airport taxi drivers are going on strike over Easter. What on earth are they thinking?

Basically the are striking because they are having a bit of a sulk. They want taxi drivers from outside the area picking up passengers from the airport.

So I suppose this is like taxi mafia turf wars. Malaga airport taxi drivers are closing ranks (excuse the pun) and they think that the best way to achieve this is to disrupt one of the busiest times of the year.

The Malaga taxi drivers are trying to enforce an old decree made back in 1985 which stated that drivers from other municipalities can not pick up passengers from the airport. The Malaga taxi drivers are even going as far to state that “they will go as far as it take, whatever the cost”.

Marbella taxi drivers are defending their right to collect pre-booked passengers from the airport but the Malaga drivers say this will leave them with only local fares and that they are not prepared to allow this.

In Spain there are no private mini cabs so all taxis are registered although as most residents of the Costa del Sol will concur, prices for exactly the same journey vary from driver to driver.

In a time when any jobs are necessary for most workers it seems insane that the Malaga taxi drivers are prepared to damage their own livelihoods and the tourism industry.

What do you think?
