Fuengirola is located about 20 minutes from Malaga Airport just off of the N340 / A7. It is certainly one of the more recognised and popular holiday resorts on the Costa del Sol and sees a lot of toursism all year around from the British and many Scandinavians too.

The coastal section of Fuengirola stretches for many kilometres and has one of the longest sections of sandy beach and promenades on the entire Costa del Sol.

The area is part of Mijas Costa and half way along the promenade there is a marina lined with shops, restaurants and places to book water-sport activities.

Fuengirola has a thriving community with a large percentage of expats from the UK, Ireland and Scandinavia who have set up home in the town.

Being one of the first major tourist resorts outside of Torremolinos, Fuengirola has grown both sideways and upwards. It is fairly built up with some of the high-rise hotels and apartments still as popular now, as they were in the 70’s when they were first built. That said, Fuengirola still has a charm and ambiance that is shared by most coastal and inland towns on the Costa del Sol.

During the summer be prepared because Fuengirola gets very busy and crowded. The long stretch of beach suddenly becomes a wave of sun bathers taking full advantage of the summer sunshine and the protection of the mountains that lie just behind the coast.

In the town centre itself there are a large number of shops selling everything from the usual Spanish gifts for holiday makers to designer clothes and shoes. There are many different commercial districts in Fuengirola both in the town and on the mountain side of the road.

Some of the main sections of the commercial zone include the large department store called Dunnes (in fact Dunnes Stores have 2 shops if Fuengirola although the largest is on the commercial park area), the newer shopping centre the Miramar Centre and a number of main car dealers. There is also a ten-pin bowling alley and cinema complex with weekly films in English.

For those of you that love the theatre, in the centre of Fuengirola there is a very popular theatre called ‘Salon Varities’, which has many amateur productions, most of which are of a very high standard.

Fuengirola spreads out over a very large area and incorporates areas like Los Boliches and Arroyo de la Miel. In the town centre there is a main bus station and a train station which runs to Malaga city centre and Malaga Airport.

Firstly, one of the easiest ways to get to Fuengirola is via train. The station is just opposite the airport and it takes you right in to the heart of town.

If you are driving then it is a straight forward route to Fuengirola from Malaga Airport. You need to leave the airport and look for the signs that say ‘Cadiz / Algeciras’ N340/A7. Follow these signs until you get on the main dual carriageway heading for Fuengirola. It is clearly signposted and is a right exit off the dual carriage (straight on would be the toll road and to Marbella).

As you come off you are now in Fuengirola so you will need to take one of the exits on the right in order to cross over to the coast area on your left.
