Thankfully Spain has come into line with other countries in the developed world and raised the age of consent to have sex and to marry.
Previously Spain had one of the lowest with the age of consent for sex being just 13 years old and to marry a mere 14 years old.
From last week the age was raised to 16 years old to marry and the new age of consent for sex is to be confirmed by parliament, but will be higher than before.
India tried lowering the age of consent from 18 to 16 but men’s attitude to sex and sexual harassment in the country meant it failed and was subsequently fixed at 18.
In the USA the age of consent varies from state to state but is between 16 and 18 years old.
The move by Spain was initiated by the Spanish Health Minister Ana Mato on the grounds of health and safety concerns.
